Sezane's Sustainability Rating:

Fair

Sezane has a Fair rating because it has made some progress with its sustainability efforts, but still has room to improve, especially considering its high-waste production model.

Sezane uses a majority of sustainable materials in its garments, and helps keeps products out of landfill by offering repair services. However, Sezane is part of the fast fashion industry, which exploits labor and natural resources while incentivizing overconsumption and generating copious excess waste. Sezane has emissions reduction targets, but doesn't publicly report its actual emissions numbers. We expect large brands with the biggest emissions impact to track and report their data publicly.

  • Raw Materials

Sezane reports that 77% of its materials are lower emissions, including GOTS cotton, recycled or RWS wool, linen, Lenzing ecovero viscose, and OKEO-TEX certified materials. It plans to reduce its remaining reliance on high emissions materials with a goal of 80+% eco-friendly materials by 2024, and has reported on progress towards this goal within the last year.

  • Energy Use & Production

Sezane uses renewable energy for a portion of its production and direct operations. It sources and manufactures its materials globally, which is standard practice in the fashion industry. It's working to reduce the span of its operations by localizing a portion of its production in Europe.

  • Packaging & Distribution

Sezane has made efforts to reduce the amount of virgin plastic in its packaging, uses 100% recycled cardboard packaging, and has specific initiatives to minimize packaging overall. It's working on reducing shipment emissions to customers by working with last mile delivery carriers to increase the use of low-emissions vehicles.

  • Repair & Care

Sezane has a repair program, but doesn't offer a warranty. It gives detailed care instructions to extend garment lifespan, though the instructions are not always eco-friendly.

  • Take Back Programs

Commons couldn't find information on any take back programs.

  • Slow Fashion

Sezane is a fast fashion brand. It has frequent new releases and limited editions.

  • Marketing

Commons is still analyzing this brand's marketing emails.

  • Transparency & Reporting

Sezane has a sustainability page with information about materials, packaging, energy use, current initiatives and progress, labor practices, and emissions reduction, but it makes this page hard to find. Larger brands have a greater responsibility to make this information clearly available due to their outsized impact. Sezane also has a detailed annual report, with a clear, impact driven strategy and progress reporting. Both resources were last updated in 2023.

  • Emissions Tracking

Sezane has measured its emissions, but it's not clear what process it used. It reports on percentage of emissions per category on an organizational level, but doesn't disclose actual CO2e totals.

  • Emissions Targets

Sezane has science-aligned - but not SBTi approved - reduction targets, but doesn't disclose baseline year or progress data. Commons could not find verification that it offsets any emissions.

  • Supply Chain & Labor

Sezane doesn't publish information about its supply chain partners beyond geographic overviews. It claims to have achieved high supply chain traceability with 100% for Tier 1, 95% for Tier 2, and 55% for Tier 3. It has a supplier code of conduct, which includes provisions for regular audits of partners, but the full text isn't publicly available.
